Skin Booster Summer Smoothie



This is a really simple summer smoothie packed with skin friendly ingredients perfect for breakfast or a post workout refuel. I suffer from pretty temperamental skin but it is always so much better in the summer and I really think it is party due to lots of Vitamin D (well I say lots, while looking out at grey clouds ready just waiting pour down at any moment) and eating way more fresh fruit than I do in the winter months. Smoothies are definitely my second favourite way to up my fruit intake in the summer, my no. 1 favourite of course being glasses of Pimms packed to the rim with strawberries and orange slices. 


There are so many ways to make smoothies which is one of the reasons we love them here as C'est la Vie Style. For this skin booster smoothie I like to add some coconut oil for all it's amazing health benefits but especially skin and hair boosting fatty acids. I then add some cashew nuts which are also packed with healthy fats and essential vitamins and minerals. They give the smoothie a lovely creamy texture and also add protein which lowers the smoothie's GI to give you a steady release of energy. Another great addition is organic ground flaxseed which is packed with omega 3 fatty acids, protein and fibre.
My favourite ingredient this time of the year is by far the humble strawberry; you can read about my less healthy but amazingly tasty strawberry cupcakes here. With more vitamin C packed into them than oranges strawberries are full of antioxidants, are super hydrating for skin and amazing for fighting wrinkles. I also add some 'superfood' crowned blueberries because they are packed with even more antioxidants, are low GI and super tasty.

I always throw in a banana which thickens the smoothie and also has mood boosting tryptophan (converted into serotonin by the body) and are high in fibre and potassium. I use a little almond milk in my smoothie but regular milk or just some water works too. There are so many other things you can add to your smoothie to make it even more nutrient rich but I like to keep it simple and quick especially when I am running out the door to work. This one has pretty much no prep and takes 3 minutes max. 
For one smoothie you will need:
1 Banana
6-8 medium strawberries
Small handful blueberries
Small handful cashew nuts
1/4 cup of milk/water
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp organic milled flaxseed

Method:
Throw all the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth, add some extra milk/water if your consistency is more thickie than smoothie and enjoy!
